Marvin Gray Dixon Sr.

UNION — Marvin Gray Dixon Sr., devoted father and husband, 75, of Union, W.Va., passed away Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va. following a long illness.

He was born in Union, W.Va., April 19, 1937, a son of the late Fred Forest and Eula Compton Dixon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his best friend and loving wife, Agnes Caroline Weikle Dixon on June 13, 2000.

Those left to cherish his memory include two sons, Marvin Dixon Jr. and wife, Terry of Forest Hill, Michael Dixon of Union; four grandsons, Aaron Dixon and Adam Dixon of Union, Mark and Andy Dixon of Forest Hill; a sister, Ruby Humphreys of Union and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin also left behind two special neighbors and friends, Richard and Patricia Ward who were faithful and caring to the end. Richard visited Marvin every day for twelve years, sometimes three or four times a day. Patty often cooked and sent meals. No better friends exist. They are both considered family.

Marvin was a retired school bus operator with over 31 years service to the Monroe County Board of Education. He also owned and operated his own building contracting business, having worked in the building trade for over 50 years. He also ran a Grade C dairy in addition to his other occupations form 1957 until 1970. One of his proudest accomplishments was that he only missed two milkings in 13 years and that was due to serious illness. When the milk route was discontinued he began raising beef cattle and registered Percheron draft horses. Marvin loved to farm and he was proud of his work ethic and heritage, raising a garden and home butchering until his health forced him to stop. He faithfully took care of his parents until their deaths and was a loving and faithful caregiver to his late wife even though his health was bad.

Marvin was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, were he served as deacon, church trustee, cemetery trustee and Sunday School Superintendent. He attended church there for over 60 years until declining health prevented him from attending.

Marvin's top priorities in life were God, his family and work. As his illness progressed he longed for the day of seeing and being with his savior Jesus Christ. He wanted everyone to know he did his best.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev James Deskins Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery on Knob's Road.
