GARY —
Samuel Lewis Johnson, age 89, of Gary, W.Va., departed this life on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville, N.C.
He was born on January 9, 1923 in Gary, W.Va., and the son of Davy and Fannie E. (McGee) Johnson. He attended public schools in Gary and was a 1941 graduate of Gary District High School. Following high school, he attended North Carolina A&T College. He was a retiree of the United States Steel Corporation. Lewis was a member of the Kimball and Keystone city councils. In 1986, the City Council appointed him mayor of the city of Keystone, W.Va. He was elected to serve two consecutive terms before retiring from politics.
Lewis was a faithful member of Rock Hill, Mount Chapel, and Upland Baptist churches and First Baptist Church of Kimball. He held numerous leadership positions, including Sunday School superintendent; dean of Christian Education and deacon and president of the WV Baptist State Convention Laymen’s Auxiliary.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Davy and Fannie Johnson and four siblings.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta; daughters, Frances “Sue” (Carnell) Watson, Ella (George) Woolridge; grandson, Samuel Mattocks; great-granddaughter, Kandrah Mattocks, great-great-granddaughter, Raz’jah Thomas; stepchildren, Joseph (Jacqueline) Hodge, Mike Hodge, Karen (Chester) Thomas and Vicki (Jerry) Lynch; step-grandchildren, Eric Woolridge, Justin and Courtney Thomas, Dayna and Jordan Lynch; and a host of relatives and friends.
Homegoing for Deacon Samuel Lewis Johnson will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Gary, W.Va. with the Rev. Eugene Watson, eulogist, the Rev. Nathaniel Burroughs, presiding and the Rev. Larry Hairston and Minister Alphonso Dalton assisting. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, on Route 20, Littlesburg Road in Bluewell, W.Va.
Family members will serve as both pallbearers and floral bearers.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., until the time of service on Tuesday at the church.
Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch, W.Va.
