PRINCETON —
Claude Alvis “Harold” Long, 83, of Wiley Street, Princeton, departed this life Saturday, October 6, 2012 at his residence.
Born April 16, 1929, in Welch, he was the son of the late Levi Long and Virginia Keaton Long.
Educated in McDowell County, Harold was a heavy equipment operator for several coal companies and was a professional bus driver for D.C. Transit and the Miami Beach Transit Authority.
He was a member of the UMWA. Harold had the distinction while working on the East River Tunnel project of removing the first load of dirt and the last load from the tunnel. He was a member of Praise Temple and the House of Praise. Harold loved people, reading his Bible, fishing and making people smile. Harold was also an ordained minister.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Scott Rose, a great-granddaughter, Iris Horton, along with eight brothers and sisters, Helen, Leona, William, Levi Jr., Travis, Billy, Russell and Douglas.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Arlene Powell Long; three children and their spouses, Elaine and Charlie Rose, Claudia and Randall Rose both of Princeton, Sheilah Long of Sandlick; five grandchildren, Sabrina Horton, Jeff Horton, Shawn Vest and wife Tammy, Michele Vest, and Chris Rose and wife Tabitha; great-grandchildren, Corey, Lee, Kindra, Jaime, Dylan, Whitni, Matthew, Autum, and Prestyn; two siblings, Herman Long of Iaeger, and Mary Wyzisk of Richmond Va.; a host of nieces and nephews; his extended family, Irene Bowen, Anna Powell, Bill and Carolyn Prater, Frances Prater, Paul Combs, Leon Nichols and Jr. Blackwell.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2012 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Connie Lester officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
Friends may visit with the family Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harold's grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers and Stacy Hicks and the employees of Princeton Rescue Squad will serve as honorary pallbearers.
