Rev. Carl W. Robinson

RICHLANDS, Va. — Now and again a person will enter your into your life and leave an everlasting impression on your heart, Rev. Carl Wright Robinson was such a person. His ministry here on earth ended on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 and his new life began as he was escorted through the gates of heaven. Yet he will always live, because he will live in each of us.

He was born in Belfast Mills, Va. and was the son of the late George Washington and Amanda Jane Jackson Robinson. Carl had attended Lebanon High School, King College and the University of Pittsburgh. He served his country during the World War II era in the Army Air Corps. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Elma Brown Robinson and together they shared 45 years of happiness. Throughout the years, he was associated with several businesses such as Vernon's grocery, the Old Wardell Ham Store, Helton & Robinson Grocery, Middle Creek Mining, Robinson Superette, Richlands Tire Service (B.F. Goodrich) and Robinson Repair. Carl had lived in the Richlands area for over 60 years. Carl enjoyed fishing, beekeeping and had dedicated his lifetime to evangelizing. Above all else his true calling was the ministry and he served as the pastor of Swords Creek Free Pentecostal Church, “The Block Church” for over 53 years and had performed 573 weddings and numerous funerals.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Elma Robinson; daughter, Bonnie Carol Robinson; son-in-law, Ronald VanDyke; sisters, Mary Maxie Helton, Eula Virginia Taylor, Carrie Leora Settle; brothers, Clyde Wilson Robinson and James Edgar Robinson. Deceased in-laws, Archie Helton, Banner Taylor, Sanford Settle, Earmel Brown and Whitney Thatcher.

Those who remain to carryon his spirit are: His daughters: Mary Ruth VanDyke of Richlands, Va., Nancy Naomi Campbell and husband Lynn of Richlands, Va., Emily Carlene Altizer and husband Rev. Michael Altizer of Richlands, Va.; foster daughter, Pauline Keen Reedy and husband James of Richlands, Va.; sisters-in-law, Doris Robinson, Ruth Short, Helen Thatcher and Eleanor Brown. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Vanessa Barker, Jackie VanDyke, Rhonda May, Christy Bunker, Teresa Conner, Kendra McVay, Katrina Harris, Stephen Altizer, Jessica Dye, Melinda Varney, Angela Davis and several great-grandchildren; niece, nephews and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services for Rev. Carl Wright Robinson will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 at the Swords Creek Free Pentecostal Church “The Block Church” in Swords Creek, Va. Officiating will be the Rev. Ancil Childress, the Rev. Steve Perkins, the Rev. Mike Altizer, the Rev. Jim Richardson, and Bro. Lynn Campbell. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Smith, Cheyenne Harris, Bob Nassif, Arnold Short, Doug Northern, John Reedy, Bob McFarlane, Luther Stinette and men of The Block Church.

Friends may call beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va. A one hour visitation will be held at the church prior to the funeral service on Tuesday.
