Alfred Dean Watkins

August 6, 1939–December 14, 2012

BLUEFIELD — Dean passed from this life, after a lengthy illness, on December 14, 2012 in Princeton Community Hospital.

He was born to Spencer and Pattie Watkins in Pageton, West Virginia, a small mining town in southern West Virginia. Spencer and Pattie Watkins moved to Bluefield in the early 40s to ensure that their children would be able to attend Bluefield State College.

In 1958, Dean graduated from Park Central High School. He attended Bluefield State College for one year. In the early 60s, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he worked at various occupations including some time in the health services field. He returned to Bluefield in the early 70s where he was employed at Bluefield State College as a supervisor in the maintenance dept. He retired many years later.

Dean was joined in matrimony to Jackie Fields of Cleveland Ohio. To this union was born a son, Andre Dean Watkins who is the father of Brianna Christian the only grandchild of Mr. Watkins. Jackie preceded Dean in death in the 90s.

He was also united in marriage to Karen Neal. No children were born to this union. The marriage was dissolved.

His parents, Spencer and Pattie Watkins of Bluefield, W.Va. preceded Mr. Watkins in death. He is survived by his son, Andre Dean Watkins; granddaughter, Brianna Christian of Georgia; his sister, Greta Ann Johnson of Memphis, Tennessee; his brother, Spencer Watkins III (Eleanora) of Rialto, California; nieces, Karen Butler of Victorville, Calif., Kathy McClure (Ricky) of Fontana, Calif., Amy Lewis (Maurice) of Memphis Tennessee, Melissa Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, at 11 a.m. from the G. H. Sinkford Memorial Chapel of the Richardson Funeral Home in Bluefield. Interment will be held at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens on Littlesburg Road.
