NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. —
Calvin C. Patterson, age 86, of the Adria community of North Tazewell, Va., died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at his home. He was born March 9, 1926 at Hartwell, W.Va., and was a son of the late Taylor and Rosa Davidson Patterson. Calvin was a retired coal miner, having worked for many years at Hawley Fuel Co. at Big Auger, W.Va.; he was a member of the UMWA Local No. 6025 at Bishop, Va. Mr. Patterson was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic / Pacific Theater. He was a Patriot who loved his Country and its flag. He was a Life Member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post No. 7136 in Tazewell, Va. and he helped with Military Graveside Rites with many other VFW Posts when the call of a fallen comrade came. Mr. Patterson was also a Life Member of the DAV, and the American Legion. Calvin was a humble man who loved his family and hunting and fishing when his health permitted. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Gentry Patterson; his second wife, Ethel Joyce Kiser Patterson; stepdaughter, Patty Sue Wilkins; granddaughter, Stephanie Dawn Monk; seven sisters; and six brothers; he is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Those left to cherish and honor his memory include his daughter, Vera Monk of Baptist Valley, Va.; three grandchildren, Jackie “Jay” Monk and wife, Christine and their children, Ethan and Samantha Kiser of North Tazewell, Va., Lee Hankins and family of North Carolina, and April Trader and family of Texas; special friends and caregivers, Robbie Kinder and husband, Darryl, Opal Saunders, Margaret Melvin, and Sylvia Farmer, all of Tazewell, Va.; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
Funeral services for Calvin C. Patterson will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Hurst - Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Reverend Kenny Fields officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post No. 9640 in Richlands, Va. will serve as pallbearers. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post No. 7136 in Tazewell, Va. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12:00 p.m. (noon) Sunday, July 29, 2012.
