Helen Leola Neal
Hickory, N.C. — On February 22, 2013 Helen Leola Neal of Hickory, N.C., formerly of Bluefield, W.Va. went home to be with the Lord. Helen was born on July 1, 1938 in Elkhorn, W.Va. to the late Charles and Viola Reynolds. She attended Mercer County Schools, graduated from Bluestone High School, and was a homemaker most of her life.
She served at several churches in McDowell and Mercer Counties to include Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Maybeury, W.Va.; Memorial Chapel and Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Bluefield, W.Va., where she served as the Minister of Music for the children's choir and the Gospel Chorus, and was also a deaconess. Helen later began to sing and minister with the West Virginia Golden Voices.
Helen moved to Hickory, N.C. in 2003 where she became a member of Exodus Missionary Outreach Church until she passed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Tony Boye Neal; four brothers, Ryvan Reynolds, John Reynolds, Richard Reynolds, June Reynolds; four sisters, Magadelene Reynolds, Betty Reynolds, Minnie Neal and Alice Martin.
Helen nurtured and raised seven children and brought them up in the admonition of the Lord. She is survived by two sons, Odell Martin, Jr. (Silfa) and Zachary Martin, both of Hickory, N.C.; five daughters; Patricia Martin and Cynthia Martin, both of Morganton, N.C., Sylvia Hudson (Jessie), of Grand Prairie, Texas, Brenda Martin, of Arlington, Texas and Tresa Neal, of Bluefield, W.Va.; two brothers, Paul Reynolds, of Wilmington, Del., and Lemuel Reynolds of Florida; one sister Josephine Williams of Cleveland, Ohio; nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday March 2, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Exodus Missionary Outreach Church 1763 Highland Avenue. Family will receive 1 hour prior to the service at 2:00-3:00 p.m. Memorials can be sent to the Neal and Martin family at 116 20th Avenue Drive NW Hickory, NC 28601
