BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Larry Wayne Powers, age 62, of Abbs Valley in Bluefield, Va., died Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, W.Va.
Born May 14, 1950 in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late Le Roy Powers Sr. and Thelma Pauline Powers Sutherland. He retired from Consolidation Coal Company Buchanan #1 Mine and had formerly worked at Island Creek Coal Company VP #3. He was a member of the UMWA Local #1640. Larry loved his kids and his grandkids and especially enjoyed time spent farming.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Le Roy Powers Jr. who died December 18, 2012.
He is survived by his wife of 44 1/2 years, Connie Powers; two sons, Larry Powers Jr. and Michael Shane Powers and wife, Jeri both of Abbs Valley, Va.; seven brothers, Gene Powers and wife, Sue of Abbs Valley, Va., Dennis Powers and wife, Joyce of Tazewell, Va., Steve Sutherland and Ronnie Sutherland both of North Caroline, Jeff Powers, Jerry Powers and wife, Tammy, Jimmy Powers and wife, Loretta all of St. Paul, Va.; two sisters, Brenda Sutherland and Judy Blackwelder and husband, Ron all of North Carolina; sister-in-law, Patricia Powers of Tazewell, Va.; four grandchildren, Cole Powers and Faith Powers both of Abbs Valley, Va., Erica Dotson of Tennessee, and Marista Powers of North Carolina; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with Pastor Carlos Hess officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Larry Powers Jr., Alex Powers, Roger Powers, Andy Buchanan, Buddy Powers, and Freddie Mullins. Chester Locke will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2013 and Thursday, February 14, 2013.
