STEELSBURG, Va. —
Otis Johnson Abel, age 93, of Steelsburg, Va., passed away Saturday, February 2, 2012 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va. after a period of declining health. Otis was born on January 4, 1920, the son of the late Robert H. and Susie M. Abel.
He was a lifelong resident of the Steelsburg Community. He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in England and Germany. Otis was known throughout the area as a master auto body craftsman. Working at this craft until his retirement. After retirement he enjoyed working in his garden and his flowers. His greatest delight was sharing his crop with his many close neighbors. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, finding great enjoyment hunting with his son for many years. He was a member of the Steelesburg United Methodist Church.
Along with his parents, Mr. Abel was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dora May Finbow Abel, from Ipswich, England; brother, Roy Abel of Scottsville, Va. and sister, Elizabeth Abel Taylor of Bristol, Va.
Mr. Abel is survived by one son, David Wayne Abel and wife Robin of Burkes Garden, Va.; one daughter, Karen Abel Webb and husband Roger of Claypool Hill, Va.; one brother, Robert Abel Jr. of Bristol, Va.; special adopted family members, Gary, Narcie and Butch Knepper of Wardel, Va.; and special friend and caregiver, Debbie Peak of Claypool Hill, Va. and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Otis Johnson Abel will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, Va. with Minister Lee Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Jim Reynolds, Ronnie Gilbert, Jimmy Maggard, Mckinnly (Ken) Tatum, Ken Walls and Ricky Vencill. Honorary pallbearers will be Lawrence Davis, Louie Barrett, Lawrence Arnold, Jerry Addison, Eula Church and Marie Helton. The family will receive friends after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Steelsburg United Methodist Church, C/O Helen Steel, P.O. Box 478, Pounding Mill, VA 24637.
