Eugene William Hite

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Eugene William Hite, 90, formerly of Raysal, W.Va., and Sterling succumbed to pancreatic cancer at his home in Fredericksburg on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013.

Gene was born July 14, 1922, in Caretta, W.Va., to John Henry and Minnie Cruise Hite.

As a teenager, Gene served in the Civil Conservation Corps in West Virginia, Utah and Wyoming. He joined the Navy and, while serving during World War II on LST 306, he was active in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, the Italian mainland and Normandy.

He was always proud to have served and loved being an American. Whenever he saw the American flag flying, he would say it was the prettiest flag on Earth.

Gene had been a member of United Mine Workers of America since 1945, and worked as a coal miner for 36 years.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and father-in-law. He loved reading the Bible, working find-the-word puzzles, watching westerns, camping and going to hunting camp with his son Charles. He would say his favorite football teams were the Washington Redskins and whoever played the Dallas Cowboys.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Della; sons, Ed Hooker and Charles Hooker and wife Darlene of King George County; his daughter, Carol Hite-Smith and husband Richard Malloy of Fredericksburg; six grandchildren, eight great-grand-children; and 10 great- great-grandchildren.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; one daughter-in-law; and one son-in-law.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Princeton, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.

Condolences may be sent to mullinsthompsonfredericksburg.com.
