Bertha B. Parks McPherson

PRINCETON — Bertha Parks McPherson went to be with her Dear Lord on Tuesday, March 05, 2013 at Mary Ellen Elder Care Facility in Princeton with her family by her side.

She was the daughter of the late James H. and Iris Shockley Parks. She was born at Maitland, W.Va., on April 9, 1911 and had been a Princeton resident since 1926. Ms. Bertha was 34 days short of being 102 years of age. She attended schools in Davy, W.Va. and Princeton, W.Va.

Bertha dedicated her whole life to the churches she attended and was a founding member of the Willowbrook Baptist Church in 1960. She taught Sunday school and Bible School for many years, she was a 4-H leader, an organizer of the Willowbrook Community Ladies Club and a member of the Golden Angels Salvation Army. Bertha began a career in 1931 with the former G.C. Murphy Company; she also worked for Montgomery Wards, Giant Dollar Store and The Green Tree Restaurant. For several years she provided a loving home to 26 foster children. She will always be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother as well as a devoted wife for 51 years to Jessie “Jack” McPherson who preceded her in death October 23, 1991. A special sister-in-law, Myrtle Reagan, deceased on August 13, 2012.

Mrs. McPherson was the last surviving member of her immediate family of two sisters and eight brothers: Helen, Lillie, Harry, Bill, Thomas, Hobert, Clarence, Howard and two infants. She was the last surviving resident of the original Willowbrook Community.

Left to cherish her memory ire two daughters, Margaret Crotts and her husband Bill and Pat Keaton and her husband Hobie; eight grandchildren, Chris and Tonia Crotts, Thomas and Sandy Crotts, Angie and Samuel Hill, Tammy Hoffman and Heather Carter; 10 great-grandchildren, Vawn and Michael Clappes, Shanaya, Jancee, Jessica and Eric Crotts; Joshua and Laura Hill, Leigha and Brie Hoffman; one great-great-grandson Owen Michael Clappes. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Bertha had several special care givers: Mary Ellen and Freddie Heath, Rebecca, Vergie Lafferty, Aleda Lafferty and Kathy.

The celebration of her Christian Life and home-going will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Burke Memorial Baptist Church on Thorn Street in Princeton with the Rev. Jim Bailey, Pastor Thurman Belcher, Pastor Kevin Belcher and the Rev. Emory Marchant officiating. Pallbearers will be the grandsons and great-grandsons. Entombment will be at the Chapel of the Wildwood Mausoleum, Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may visit with the family at Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening. Bertha has lived a wonderful life worth remembering.
