BISHOP, Va. — Ethel Lee Hopson Bennett, age 90 of Bishop, Va., died Monday, March 18, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center at Charlotte, N.C. Born November 3, 1922 at Calumet, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Ola Harris Hopson. Ethel Bennett served as Church Clerk of Little Zion Baptist Church since 1980. She has also served as Vice President of the Flat Top Women’s Convention, Secretary of Deacon’s Wives Union, President of Excelsior High School Alumni Association (WV Chapter), member of the Board of Directors CVCA; RSVP Volunteer, member of Advisory Council, Women’s Auxiliary American Legion Post No. 331, Sunday School Teacher, Intermediate Class President of Missionary Society 1979-1994, Graduate of Excelsior High School Class of 1940, attended Bluefield State College and Southwest Community College. She was a longtime nurse for Dr. C.H. Goodykoontz at his office until he retired in 1979. Mrs. Bennett loved gardening and cooking. Her gladiolas were a beautiful sight. She gave huge bouquets to friends and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank D. Bennett who died November 26, 2012; two sisters, Laura Belle Murphy, Velma Hopson Bennett; two brothers, Wilson Hopson and William Hopson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, William E. Bennett and wife, Patricia of Bishop, Va., and Roderick A. Bennett and wife, Edie of Voorhees, N.J.; two daughters, Mina Bennett Williams of Charlotte, N.C. and Olivia Stephens and husband, Steve of Jonesboro, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Robert L. Stephens, III, Stephanie L. Stephens, Roderick L. Bennett, Christa L. Stephens, Nichole J. Denson, Emanuel A. Bennett, and Mina Bennett Gray; six great-grandchildren, Isaiah Bennett, Ashley Igbokidi, Noah Bennett, Olivia Henderson, Sakari Denson, and Kayo Pouchous.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church at Bishop, Va., with the Reverend Joseph Moore, Jr. and the Reverend Donald Bean, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens at Bluewell, W.Va. Pallbearers will be Michael Bennett, Donald Bennett, Mark Lambright, Emanuel Bennett, Eddie Beamer, Bernard Murphy, Eric Sherman, Michael Bennett, II, Donald Bean, and Reginald Lambright Jr.
The family will receive friends at the church from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2013.
