WELCH —
Mary A. Lipscomb Orr, age 98, of Welch, formerly of Roderfield, peacefully departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012 in the comfort of her home.
Mrs. Orr was born Oct. 18, 1914 in Gaffney, S.C. and was the daughter of the late Judson and Molly (Tate) Lipscomb. After graduating from West Virginia State College, she began her career as a school teacher. Mrs. Orr taught school in Alabama, and Hopewell City Schools in Virginia and was a substitute teacher for the McDowell County Board of Education. She was a faithful, long time member of Havaco Temple Missionary Baptist Church where she served as mother and pianist of the church and choir director. Mrs. Orr was her family’s historian, she was a seamstress and enjoyed crafts. Her most favorite pastimes were spent fishing and she enjoyed sports. Michael Jordan was her most favorite athlete and the Chicago Bulls was her most favorite team. Mrs. Orr was far active beyond her years for she continued driving until the age of 95.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Orr; and her eight siblings, infant brother, Bubba Lipscomb, Willie Racheau Lipscomb, Ollie Lipscomb, Viola Lipscomb, Maceo Lipscomb, Monetta Lipscomb, Cleo Belcher and Lorena Walker. Mrs. Orr was the last surviving member of her original family.
She leaves a lifetime of cherished memories to her sons, Michael A. and wife Cynthia Orr of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Kenneth L. and wife Dorothy Orr of Welch with whom she made her home; her five grandchildren, Jamal and wife Lisa Orr, Chana Orr, Kniche’ and husband Michael Clark, Knasaun Orr and Knasarae Orr; 10 great-grandchildren, several generations of nephews and nieces, and her church family.
Service will be held at noon on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 honoring the life of Mrs. Mary L. Orr at Havaco Temple Missionary Baptist Church with her sons, the Reverend Kenneth L. Orr (her Pastor) and the Reverend Michael A. Orr officiating. Interment will follow in Rest lawn Memorial Gardens, on Rt. 20, Littlesburg Road, Bluewell.
Family and friends will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., until the time of Service on Friday at the Church.
Services entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.
