FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. —
Mary J. (Dockery) Wallington, formerly of Elkhorn/Powhatan, and Hiddenite, N.C.,, died Dec. 2, 2012 at the Cape Fear Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C.
Born July 8, 1940 in Welch, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Helen Hairston Henderson. Mary was a graduate of Elkhorn High School, class of 1958, and worked for the McDowell County Council of Southern Mountains Head Start Program for 24 years as a parent coordinator. She also worked as a certified nursing assistant in North Carolina for 6 years.
Mary was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Dockery Sr. and Harold R. Wallington; and her brother, Robert (Peterball)/(Mary) Henderson.
Mary will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and closest friends.
To cherish her best memories are her daughters, Eddie Marie Dockery of Elkhorn, and Emma Mae Surratt of Fayetteville, N.C.; her sons, Frank (Cindy) Dockery Jr. of Taylorsville, N.C. and Johnny Dockery of Hiddenite, N.C.; four granddaughters, four grandsons and a great-granddaughter; one sister, Eddie Mae Gravely of Powhatan; two brothers, Roland (Rose) Henderson of Powhatan and Percy James Henderson of Taylorsville, N.C. Other survivors include one Dockery sister-in-law, Gertrude Reese of Guyton, Ga.; and one brother-in-law, Johnny Dockery of Fayetteville, N.C.; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews and extended family friends.
Durgan funeral home in Beckley is serving the family and, per Mary’s request, cremation services were performed. It is the family’s desire to respect her wishes, but will hold memorial gatherings at various locations in the near future with close family and friends in honor and respect of Mary’s life.
