Benjamine Lincoln Samuel Pearson

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Benjamine Lincoln Samuel Pearson, 65, of Bluefield, Va., passed away Wednesday Nov. 28, 2012 at Westwood Genesis Care Nursing Home in Bluefield, Va.

Bennie was born March 31, 1947, the oldest of two children. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Louis Pearson; great-niece, Michyala Quitte Parson; and great-great niece, Shaani Pearson.

Left to cherish his memories are his mother, Irisca T. Pearson of Bluefield, Va.; sister, Rreewentha M. Leggett of Bluefield; son, Sergeant Major Steven Smith, of Pa.; two granddaughters, Shontrell and Alexus Smith of Md.; four nieces, Errica V. Martin and husband David of Bluefield, Va., Lawanna Q. Pearson of Willington, Del., Irisca I.V. and Riqui S. Leggett of Bluefield; one nephew, Howard B. Leggett, Jr. of Radford, Va.; five great-nephews, Benoni C.M., Reaninia D., Rahsaan D.S., Elisha S.S., Demetrius H.N., DeLonnie L.; six great-great nieces, Rreewentha K.C., L.D. Shenae, Keyana Q., Chyna Q.A., Paris L.D. and Titiana V.; two great-great nephews, four great-great nieces and a host of cousins and friends.

Bennie was a 1965 graduate of Tazewell County High, Bluefield, Va.  He attended Bluefield State College while working at WHIS TV Station, and was head organist in the Paul Johnson Band. Several people from this area and around played along side him. During that time, the Vietnam War was going on and he heard the call to serve his country and he did so as a Marine. He joined the Marine Corps in October 1966, and while fighting for our country, he received several medals.

During leave, while at home, he was injured in a car accident on Rt. 52 in Bluefield that left him with a broken neck, leaving him a paraplegic. This did not stop him in any way.  He learned to walk again with canes, drove his favorite vehicle, his “Jeep Wagoneer” and lived life to its fullest.

After many years, his body started to fail him. He moved to the Vet Care Center in Roanoke, Va. where he lived for fourteen years. Knowing his condition, he decided to move back home to Westwood and spend his last days with his mother and family. After a year, he departed this world with his niece Errica by his side.

Benny loved life, music and family.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday Dec. 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from Greater Mt. Zion Church with Bishop Clarence Moore officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour. Burial will be at a later date.
