COALWOOD —
Ernest O’Dell (Red) Carroll, 92, of Coalwood, W.Va., died at 9:50 a.m. on January 8, 2011 at Appalachian Regional Health Care in Beckley. Born May 3, 1918 in Coalwood, W.Va., he was the son of the Late Frank and Sadie Meadow Carroll.
Red was a lifelong resident of Coalwood. He was a devout man of God and father. He was a lifetime member of Coalwood Pentecostal Holiness Church.
He loved hunting, gardening and held a special place in his heart for his flowers. He proudly served as the official Rocket Boys Cape Coalwood tour guide for over a decade. He was awarded the West Virginia 35th Star award by Governor Manchin.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Virginia Beulah Carroll; his son, Donnie Carroll; and his siblings, Ruby, Robert, Bill, Charles and Frank Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Ivy Carroll; his children, four sons, Jimmy O’Dell Carroll of Gate City, Va., Jerry (Brenda) Carroll of Gray, Tenn., Josh (Kaila) Carroll of Caretta, W.Va. and Caleb Carroll of the home; one daughter, Janet Rorrer of Floyd, Va.; his siblings, Catherine, Jenny, Thelma, Charlene, Elizabeth, Pat, Sue, Shelby, Peggy, Brenda, Roger and Ronnie; his grandchildren, Andrea and Jonathan Carroll, Lynne and Mike Metzler, Bary and Brian Rorrer, Jennifer Daley, Matthew, Ashley and Will Carroll, Jaiden, Kyrese and Donavyn Watts; great-grandchildren, David, Sheila, Katie, Taylor and Daniel Metzler. Sidney, R. J. and Logan Rorrer, Lauren and Julia Daley; and his great-great-grandchild, Kylee Metzler; as well as many more nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. from the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch with the Reverends Gary Cope and Michael Brooks officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon, Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va.
Pallbearers will be Richard Blankenship, Bary Rorrer, Brian Rorrer, Josh Carroll, Matt Carroll and Will Carroll. Honorary pallbearers will be Ervin Rorrer, Joe Novak, Dr. David Skewes and Ringo Kirk.
Friends may call, Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fanning Funeral Home in Welch.
