BLUEFIELD, Va. —
John Mico Jr., 89, of 393 Mico Road, Bluefield, Va. (Abb's Valley), passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. John was born Aug. 23, 1923 in New Camp, Ky. to the late John Mico Sr. and Anna Joba Mico.
John was a disabled veteran having served his country with the US Army during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon with the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of the American Legion Post #14 in Pocahontas, Va. and the DAV and VFW 9696 of Bluefield, Va. John was retired from US Steel In Gary and was a member of the United Mines Workers Local 9534. He was also a member of the Abb's Valley Baptist Church in Abb's Valley, Va.
He loved working in his flower garden, hunting, fishing. When his health started declining and preventing him from enjoying these hobbies, he loved to watch the deer and turkeys from his window.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving son, Wayne Mico, who passed away Dec. 5, 2009; one brother, Bill Mico; and two sisters, Lillia Beeman and Helen Buckly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret Bowman Mico of the home; brother, Eddie (Mary Lou) Mico of StClair Shore, Mich.; special brother-in-law, Willis (Sue) Bowman of Valparaiso, Ind.; a host of special nieces and nephews; special friend, Jim (Mary) Howard who was like a son to him of Abb's Valley, Va.; special caregivers, Janet Kennedy and Kathy Shupe of Abb's Valley, Va. and Tammy Mitchell of Jenkinjones.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rodriguez Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Va. with the Rev. Tom Barker, the Rev. Paul Baker, Dr. Darrell Hunley, the Rev. Bill Davis and Walter Schwitzerlett officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va.
Friends may call Saturday Dec. 8, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Rodriguez Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Va.
Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #14 of Pocahontas, Va. and the VFW Post 9696 of Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Greg Mico, Brian Mico, Mark Mico, JR Lambert, Nicklous Lambert, Melvin Simmons, Eddie Hederick and Greg Bowman. Honorary pallbearers will be Arnold Walters, Arnie Walters, Tom Davis, Al Altizer, Chuck Pridemore, Charlie Sarver, Doc Taylor, Jerry Howard, Joe Mitchem, Harry Hubble, Eric Hubble and Ryan Hubble.
