BLUEFIELD —
On January 30, 2013, God called home one of the greatest mothers in the world. Cassie Mae Dowell died at Bluefield Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loved ones and pastor. On August 3, 1928 Cassie Mae was born to James Kemper and Annie West Sr.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; one daughter, Delores Dowell Martin; and ex-husband, Young Dowell Sr.
Cassie Mae found Christ at an early age. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served on the Senior Usher Board until health issues intervened.
She was employed by C.A.S.E. Head start for 35 years. She is a former member of the Eureka Temple #339, Bluefield, W.Va. and the Maggie L. Walker Temple #738, Beckley, W.Va. of the IBPO Elks of the World.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters: Gwendolyn with whom she made her home, Lynn Washington of Beckley, W.Va. and Anita (Howard) Watkins of Bluefield; five sons: Alphonso (Barbara), Maxwell (Easter), Timothy and Michael Dowell of Bluefield, W.Va., Young Jr. of Lisbon, Ohio and one granddaughter, Cassie Cousins of Bluefield that was raised as a daughter; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Scott of Lakeland, Fla., and Annie Ruth Green of Cheverly, Md.; one brother, James Kemper (Viola) West Jr. of Woodbridge, Va.; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends who loved her.
Services will be conducted Monday, February 4, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bluefield with the Rev. James J. Palmer III officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery, Princeton, W.Va. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
