LEXINGTON, Ky. —
Patty Sue Hess Griffith, 75, of Lexington, Ky., passed away on Jan. 27, 2013. She was born on July 29, 1937, to Carles and Stella Childress Hess at Mouthcard, Ky.
Patty graduated from Grundy High School in 1954 and Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia in 1958. She retired from teaching at Grundy Junior High School in 2001. She was united in marriage to Herbert Leo Griffith on Sept. 12, 1958. She was a long time member of the Mouthcard Baptist Church, Mouthcard, Ky., and attended the Grundy Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Leo; her daughter, Jill (Bill) Phelan; her son, Kevin (Sandy) Griffith; four grandchildren, Liam and Aidan Phelan, and Alex and Ian Griffith, all of Lexington. Also surviving are two sisters, Glema (Evans) Delaney, Grundy, Va. and Patricia (Terry) Wilson, of Knoxville, Iowa; three brothers, Dr. Charles Hess of Charlottesville, Va., Walter (Jo Ann) Hess, and Jimmy (Jean) Hess, of Big Rock, Va.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also leaves behind four dear friends, Janice Farmer, Sue Branham, Pat Fletcher, and Mary Helen Looney, all of Grundy, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dr. Ralph Hess and David Hess; and two nephews, Ralph Hess Jr. and Philip Hess.
A memorial service will be held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Rd. in Lexington on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at 1 p.m. The family will be present for the visitation beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Officiating will be her nephews, The Rev. Hans Hess and The Rev. Danny Hess.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary School, 605 Hill N Dale Drive, Lexington, KY 40503, or Maxwell Spanish Immersion Elementary School, 301 Woodland Ave., Lexington, KY 40508, where her beloved grandchildren attend school.
