BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Earl Delano Phipps, 73, of 348 Phipps Rd, Bluefield, VA (Boissevain), passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va.
Born in Boissevain, Va., he was the son of the late William D. Phipps and Armeta Sawyers Phipps. Earl loved his hometown of Boissevain and Pocahontas, Va. He spent most of his life devoted to his love of country music. He was well known as a learned historian of country music having recorded country music by video and tape recorder. He especially admired Darnell Miller, country music star, who became a great personal friend.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Billy H. Phipps and Noah K. Phipps.
Survivors include three sisters, Rebecca A Krueger (Glenn) of Rennselear, Ind., Dixie L. Brady of Greensboro, N.C., and Sarah Jane Jennings (Tommy) of Athens; seven brothers, Hughey D. Phipps (Lisa) of Independence, Va., Basil F. Phipps (Susan) of Portland, TX, Giles D. Phipps of Springville, Va., Sherman C. Phipps (Pam) of Boissevain, Va., Gary W. Phipps (Kathy) of Boissevain, Va., Harry D. Phipps (Elizabeth) of Boissevain, Va., and Dale A. Phipps (Zena) of Robstown, TX; a host of nieces and nephews; and longtime friend Dewey Shrader of Abb's Valley, Va.
Funeral services will be held today (Saturday), December 29, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Boissevain, Va. with the Pastor Bunny Watkins officiating. Internment will follow at the Phipps Family Cemetery in Boissevain, Va. Friends may call Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Boissevain, Va. Family members will gather at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to the Rescue 945 of Boissevain, Va.
Pallbearers will be family.
