BURKE’S GARDEN, Va. —
Mary Elizabeth Hypes McGinnis, age 91, of Burke's Garden, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012 at the Mayfair House at Claypool Hill, Va. Born March 28, 1921 at Tannersville, Va., she was a daughter of the late Howard and Della Asbury Hypes. She was a member of the Burke's Garden United Methodist Church. Mrs. McGinnis was an avid gardener and especially loved working with her flowers. She loved quilting and made quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. McGinnis also taught school in Tazewell County a number of years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Joseph Mahood McGinnis and one sister, Lois Harman.
She is survived by one son, Joe Howard McGinnis and wife Brenda, and one daughter, Debra McGinnis Mink and husband Bill all of Burke's Garden, Va.; one brother, Kenneth Hypes and wife Ruth Vanhoozier Hypes of Burke's Garden, Va.; two sisters, Peggy Necessary and Della Ruth Osborne and husband Bill all of Tannersville, Va.; five grandchildren, Shayna McGinnis, Justin McGinnis, Beth Mink Patton, Amanda Mink Gentile, and Paige Mink Marta; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 at Burke's Garden United Methodist Church in Burke's Garden, Va. with the Reverend Dr. Kevin Richardson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Burke's Garden Cemetery Association C/O Barbara Rhudy 7756 Burke's Garden Rd. Tazewell, VA 24651 or Burke's Garden United Methodist Church C/O Kathy Claytor, 2554 Bank's Ridge Rd, Tazewell, VA 24651.
