Virginia Mae “Ginny Mae” Van Dyke Kinney

TAZEWELL — Virginia Mae “Ginny Mae” Van Dyke Kinney, age 81, of Palmetto, Fla. and Tazewell, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at her home in Tazewell, Va. Born Nov. 20, 1931 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Oscar (R.O.) Van Dyke Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Hubbard Van Dyke.

She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell, Va. and the First United Methodist Church in Bradenton, Fla. A graduate of Tazewell High School, she received her B.S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. While attending the University of North Carolina, she taught as a graduate assistant and later taught at Hollins College in Roanoke, Va. Mrs. Kinney was a member of the Service Club, Contemporary Book Club, Entre Nous Service Club, a proud member of the Dixie Chicks, and a previous member of the Manatee River Garden Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harley P. Kinney; one daughter, Laura Louise Kinney; three brothers, Edward Ralph Van Dyke, William Howard Van Dyke, and Claude Harrison Van Dyke.

Mrs. Kinney is survived by two daughters, Patricia Elizabeth Hrabar and husband, Nikola of Boca Raton, Fla. and Susanna Virginia Crane and husband, Barry of Bristol, Va.; one son, Dr. Edward Rufus Kinney  of Boulder, Colo.; one sister, Mary Elizabeth “Sis” Van Dyke of Lynchburg, Va.; one brother, Dr. R.O. Van Dyke Jr. and wife, Bonnie L. Van Dyke of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Christopher Coleman, Marcus Coleman, and Annie Mae Coleman; sisters-in-law, Bettye H. Van Dyke and Suzanne D. Van Dyke both of Tazewell, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell, Va. with the Reverend Dr. Thomas A. Conley and the Reverend Anthony Grills officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va. Pallbearers will be Dr. Edward Kinney, Nikola Hrabar, Barry Crane, Christopher Coleman, Marcus Coleman, and George Van Dyke. Family and friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Main Street United Methodist Church, 315 E. Main St., Tazewell, VA 24651 or the Laura Louise Kinney Scholarship Fund at Virginia Intermont College, 1013 Moore St., Bristol, VA 24201.

Mrs. Kinney was a joy to her family's life and will be greatly missed.
