Dr. Steven D. Lilly, 75, of 363 Clairmont Hills Drive in Princeton died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born Oct. 8, 1937 in Pearisburg, Va., he was the son of the late S.D. Lilly and Lucille Kanode Lilly.
Steve lived a life of strong commitment to his ministry and exemplifying the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In 1969 he received his B.A. degree in liberal arts from Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn. He continued his education in the humanities program at the University of Richmond, Va. He earned both his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from the Luther Rice Seminary in Lithonia, Ga. His ministry path was serving as Senior Pastor at Liberty Baptist Church in Princeton from 1979 to 1985 where the congregation grew from 35 to over 1100 members and developed numerous outreach programs. Steve developed his Home Based Evangelism Program in 1985 before serving as senior pastor at Beacon Baptist Church in Bluefield where membership grew from three families to 200+ members and more outreach programs. He then moved on to serve as chaplain/intern at Amory Pastoral Institute in Raleigh, N.C. and then as adjunct professor at the Theological Education Center in Baton Rouge, La. In 1994 he started Steve Lilly Ministries, a home based ministry for church growth seminars, revival meetings and a counseling practice that continued until his death. Steve has also served as chaplain at Princeton Community Hospital since 2003 where he also served on the cancer committee and the ethics committee. Steve was named “2010 Man of the Year” by Oasis Ministries at Genoa Baptist Church in Columbus, OH for demonstrating leadership and excellence in mentoring the pastors at Genoa and for assisting many pastors of small and growing churches for over 25 years in Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio through an association with Oasis Ministries. Steve also authored and published the book “Energize to Evangelize”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Tina Marie Lilly; one brother, James Edward Lilly; and one sister, Alma Delores Lilly.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Peggy Dunn Lilly of Princeton; three grandchildren, Christy Niday Cheney and husband David of San Antonio, TX, Aaron Niday and wife Melissa of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Joshua Niday and wife Jenae of Centennial, Colo.; one brother, Curtis Lilly and wife Barbara of Princeton; four sisters, Lottie Shields, Geneva Walters, Janice Hicks and husband Ronald, and Drema Radford all of Princeton; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Steve will be conducted noon on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Liberty Baptist Church, 260 Windy Hill Drive, Princeton, WV 24740 with Pastor Frank Carl and Pastor Randy Lanham officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Princeton. Friends may call at Liberty Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to the service hour on Saturday. Family, friends and the Volunteer Chaplains at PCH will serve as pallbearers.
