GAP MILLS, Va. —
Samuel Harrison Butler, age 92, of HC83 Box 77B, Gap Mills, Va., and formerly of Anawalt, passed away on Monday, Aug. 27, 2012 at his home. Born on June 20, 1920 in Kentucky, he was a son of the late Walter and Nan Peters Butler. He had been a resident of Gap Mills for 14 years and was a member of the Maybeury Church of God. He was a retired coal miner and was a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lakie Lou Greer Butler; two sons, Jessie Butler and Ronnie Butler; and his brothers; and sisters. He was the last surviving member of his family.
Survivors include son, Jim Butler and wife, Phyllis, of Cherryville, N.C.; three daughters, Fran Woods and husband, Don, of Gastonia, N.C., Carroll Martin and husband, Thomas, of Gap Mills, Va., Joyce Keene and husband, Hobert, of Mt. Holly, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
Friends may call one hour prior to services, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
