PRINCETON — Mason D. Worrell, 68, of Sandrine Pointe, Princeton, departed this life on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at his residence with his family at his side, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 12, 1941, he was the son of Helen Elmore Worrell of Princeton and the late Rufus D. Worrell.

Mason was a graduate of Princeton High School, Class of 1959. He received his bachelor’s degree in Education/Music from Concord College and a Master’s Degree from Radford University.

Mason began his teaching career at Richland High School in Richlands, Va. He began his long teaching career in Mercer County, having taught at Montcalm, Flat Top, Camp Creek, Knob, Silver Springs and retiring from Mercer Elementary School in 2004. Mason loved teaching and directing music; he truly was gifted. His love for his students was genuine and sincere. He was a member of the Princeton Presbyterian Church and was an Elder of the Church.

Mason was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and grandfather. He loved being outside, especially working in his yard, raising his roses, and pulling his grandson, Miciah, in his little wagon around the neighborhood.

Survivors include, his faithful and loving wife of 40 years, Shirley White Worrell; two sons, Anthony T. Worrell of Princeton, Craig B. Worrell and wife Mandi of Brunswick, Ohio; his mother, Helen Elmore Worrell of Princeton; the joy of his life, his grandson, Miciah Anthony Worrell; brother, Arthur D. Worrell and wife Sharon B. of Rogers Ark.

On Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., we will celebrate the wonderful life of Mason Worrell from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Ed Pettus officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

A time of sharing and gathering will be held on Monday evening, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearer for Mason will be John Keith Johnston, Dale Keith Worrell, A. M. Martin, Judd Weber, Zina Burks, Lee J. Terry, Charles Hutchens and Steve Adams.
