BURKE’S GARDEN, Va —
Charles Marvin Meek, age 90, of Burke's Garden, Va., died Sunday, December 16, 2012 at his home. Born March 3, 1922 at Burke's Garden, Va., he was a son of the late Alex and Roberta Thompson Meek.
He and his late wife, Ella Baumgardner Meek, worked side by side for their entire married life of sixty-eight years. They lived in Arizona and California for forty years where they managed cattle ranches and showed registered cattle all over the country. In 2011, they were both inducted into the American Hereford Association's Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Kansas City, Mo.. Mr. Meek was very proud of having worked twenty-five years for The 26 Bar Ranch in Arizona which was co-owned by actor, John Wayne. He valued the many friends he and his wife made all around the country through their connections in the cattle business. Since retiring in 1985, he lived and worked on his family farm in Burke's Garden.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe Meek, Bud Meek, Tom Meek, and Jack Meek.
He is survived by three daughters, Bobbie Meek Brecht of Iowa, Doris Meek and husband, Philip of Burke's Garden, Va., and Judy Meek Eustis and husband, Scot of New Mexico; a sister, Lillian Meek Yeago of Staunton, Va.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Reverend Rodney Lawson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Burke's Garden Cemetery Association, C/O Barbara Rhudy, 7756 Burke's Garden Rd., Tazewell, VA 24651.
