LINDSIDE —
John Ryan Houchins was born April 8, 1937 to Ernest L. and Hazel Mann Houchins in South Beckley, W.Va. He passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, Va. at the age of 75.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Nita Jean Houchins Cecil and brother, Ernest Lee Houchins Jr. In addition, his children's mother, Brenda Brooks Houchins Rishell.
John is survived by his wife, Virginia Simmons Houchins of Lindside; daughter, Linda Jean Houchins Oaks (Eric, grandson, Adam Jeffrey Oakes of Sterling, Va.; son, Jeffrey Brooks Houchins of Frederick, Md.; stepchildren, Tomme Warrington Saltvick (Brad), Casey Ritter Warrington of Santa Rosa, Calif., Amanda Warrington Rowe (Albert) of Sterling, Va. and step-grandchildren, Tiffany Eden Warrington Rowe Hamilton (Michael) of Gloucester, N.C. and Wylie Bear Warrington Rowe of Sterling, Va.; a maternal uncle, Richard Mann of Shady Spring, W.Va.; and many cousins whom he treasured.
He attended Mercer County Schools, graduating in 1955 where he was remembered as a kind and courteous classmate. He received a BA in Graphic Arts in 1959 from Concord College. He began his career at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in the art department. In 1965 he relocated to Northern Virginia where he worked for various firms. He retired from the Department of State in 1994. He returned to Monroe County where he often said his fondest memories were of playing with family members on Buzzard Run and the narrows of Hans Creek.
A celebration of John's life will be held at Appalachian Christian Center in Peterstown, W.Va. on December 13, 2012 at 12:00 noon. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Officiating will be Pastor Michael Biggs and Elder Norvel Mann. Burial will follow in Keaton Cemetery in Greenville, W.Va.
Honored pallbearers are: Stanley Elmore, Paul Elmore, Harold Ray Dickson, Harry Lee Mann, Bobby Mann, and Larry Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Keaton Cemetery, Rt. 1 Box 35, Lindside, WV 24951.
