BLUEFIELD, Va. —
Harold Eugene “Jack” Parris, 89, of the Bluestone Community, Bluefield, Va., passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013. Born March 12, 1923, he was the son of the late James and Minnie Proffitt Parris.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Helen Summers Parris; daughter, Beth Parris Armbrister; sister, Margaret Parris; and brothers, Carl, Clayton, Harry, Efford and Stuart “Toots” Parris.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during W.W.II. He retired from Betsy Ross and Flowers Bakeries after 45 years of service as a route salesman and supervisor of transportation. After retirement, he spent 20 years repairing lawnmowers and small engines for the community. He was an avid birdwatcher, a faithful member of Ebenezer UMC of Bluefield, Va., and enjoyed traveling the country with his wife. All who met him recognized a man of honesty, truth, and quiet strength.
He is survived by his sister, Muriel Hunt of Yorktown, Va.; his daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Robin Kidd of Salem, Va., and Jennifer and Brooks Akers of Bluefield, Va.; six grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, followed by a celebration of life at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va. with the Rev. Ray Amos and Rev. Steve Aker officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens with family members serving as pallbearers.
