BLUEFIELD —
Carrie B. Kirk Hargro was called to join the Angels on January 21, 2013. Born January 5, 1926 in Berwyn, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of the late J.T. Kirk and Matilda Johnson Kirk.
Carrie was a long-time resident of Bluefield and Lindside, West Virginia where she lived since leaving her childhood home in Oklahoma. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1944 and worked at Will Rogers Army Air Force Base where she met her husband of 59 years, the late Other E. Hargro. They were blessed with two sons, Edward and Wendell Hargro.
She was an excellent cook, housewife and mother. Some say she was the best cook and baker in the area, known for her famous “chicken and dumplings and coconut pound cake that would melt in your mouth”. If you ever stopped by to visit, you always received a great meal.
Carrie was a certified beautician owning her salon from 1958 until she retired in 2008. Her desire was to always go to college. At the age of 40 she enrolled at Bluefield State College and graduated with a BS degree in Elementary Education. She retired from the McDowell County School System, where she taught for 20 years.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for over 50 years where she was an active member of the choir, the kitchen committee and other church organizations. She was also a member of the graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
Predeceasing her in addition to her parents and husband, Other Hargro were: Four sisters, Mineola, Bertha, Christine and Katherine; one brother, Buford Kirk.
Survivors include her sons, Edward (Gloria) Hargro of Morgantown, W.Va. and Wendell (Oretha) Hargro of Vacaville, Calif.; granddaughter, Trecia (Sean) Finley; grandson, Edward A. Hargro; great-grandson, Malik Hargro; sisters, Marie Renfro, Mae Fannie Hamilton, Elvia Kirk and Alene Dunlap; brother, Jobie Kirk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 12 noon, from the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bluefield, West Virginia with the Rev. James Palmer III officiating. Entombment will follow at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens on Littlesburg Road.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to service.
Richardson Funeral Home of Bluefield is in charge of arrangements.
