LEBANON, Va. —
Ruby Maydeen Horn Kyttle Rood, age 67, of Lebanon, Va., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013. Born Oct. 28, 1945, in Buchanan County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Letcher and Josie Addison Horn of Richlands, Va. She was a 1965 graduate of Richlands High School.
Ruby retired in 1997 after being a devoted employee of the Prince Georges County Library in Oxon Hill, Md. for approximately 30 years. She was also employed by the Maryland Jockey Club of Laurel, Md. for 15 years. She was a dedicated employee of both of these organizations and had a strong work ethic which was valued by all those she worked with.
Ruby most enjoyed spending time with her family and loved getting together with them for holidays and cookouts. She especially loved when her nieces and nephews visited with her and shared stories of their lives. She was noted in her Waldorf, Md., neighborhood for handing out the best trick or treat bags ever on Halloween. Many Halloween nights more than 100 children came to her house to receive her bag of candy and marvel at the amount of candy they received. Ruby also liked to travel and eat out. She enjoyed tending to and spending time with her dog, Levi, who brought much joy to her in recent years. Ruby made her home in Waldorf, Md. before relocating to Lebanon, Va., approximately seven years ago.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Allene Horn Strouth; and three brothers, Albert (Elmer) Horn, Elden James Horn, and an infant brother.
Ruby is survived by her husband of 34 years, Larry Rood, of Lebanon, Va.; a step-daughter, Sherri Ennis, of Waldorf, Md.; a step-son, Joey Rood, of Pelham, Ala.; four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ira Horn and wife Mavis of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Ted Horn and wife Phyllis of Pounding Mill, Va.; and three sisters, Betty Horn Warburton, of Lebanon, Va., Gaynelle Horn Harman and husband Gene of Richlands, Va., and Beatrice Horn Kruckow and husband Richard, of LaPlata, Md. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. Ruby is also survived by her dog, Levi.
Funeral services for Ruby are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, Va., with the Rev. Dennis White and Rev. Mike Harrison officiating. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at the Horn Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today (Friday), Jan. 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and prior to the service on Saturday.
