DALEVILLE, Va. —
Dr. Dewey James Bailey Jr., 83, of Daleville, Virginia died peacefully with all six sons and his wife at his side on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Princeton, W.Va., son of the late Dewey James Bailey and Ruby Thomas Bailey.
In his early years, Doc was a multi-sport athlete at Princeton High School, graduating with honors in 1947. He also achieved Eagle Scout status in the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia University in 1951. Doc was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-medical honor society while at WVU. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1955 and became the chief internal medicine resident of the University of Virginia. Following his medical training, Doc served his country in the United States Air Force at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama and was honorably discharged in 1963.
He was a retired partner of Crystal Spring Internal Medicine and practiced in Roanoke from 1963 until 1998. During this time he touched the lives of many people in the greater Roanoke area. He was a member of the Roanoke Country Club, Botetourt Country Club and a former member of the board of the Roanoke and Botetourt Telephone Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Jack Bailey, and his first wife, Nancy Louise Casey Bailey.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of fourteen years, Shirley G. (Patty) Peck Bailey; his six sons: Dr. Richard Glenn Bailey and his wife Kelly, Eugene Michael Bailey and his wife Sally, Stephen Randolph Bailey, Dr. Dewey James Bailey III and his wife Susan, Hal Thomas Bailey Sr. and his wife Cindy, and Robert Casey Bailey, all of the Roanoke and Botetourt area. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Linda Carbone and her husband Tom of Dallas, Texas. Doc has twelve grandchildren, Kyle, Marshall, Anne, Paige, Tyler, Carrington, Lizzie, Julia, Hal, Jack, Emma, and Sophie, who lovingly remember him as Papa Doc.
Throughout the years, Doc most enjoyed practicing medicine and he cherished the relationships he formed with his patients. Outside of work he enjoyed golf and hunting trips with his sons and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, c/o Shriner's Temple, 4328 Salem Turnpike, NW, Roanoke, Va.
A celebration of Dr. Dewey James Bailey's life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Rader Funeral Home in Dale, Va. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2012.
