Charles Cameron “Cam” Lewis II
DANIELS — Charles Cameron “Cam” Lewis II, 70, of Daniels, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center, following a sudden illness.
Cam was born in Beckley, W.Va., Dec. 19, 1942, to the late Cam and Odessa Lewis.
Cam was happily married to Marie Newcomb-Lewis in April 2011.
Cam attended Woodrow Wilson High School with the class of 1960. He graduated from Augusta Military Academy in 1961. He attended Beckley and Morris Harvey colleges, and was a graduate of Bluefield State College, with a degree in Criminal Justice.
Cam served as Director of the Enforcement Division for the West Virginia Division of Highways, Department of Transportation, from 1981-2002. He had previously served as Director of Safety Responsibility for the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. At one time, he operated his own company, C. Cameron Lewis, Trucking and Excavation. He was presently employed by Tammy Lynn Outdoor Advertising, of Bluefield.
An active and proud member of the Democratic Party, Cam formerly served as Chairman of the Raleigh County Democrat Executive Committee. He was a former elected member of the State Democrat Executive Committee, where he had served as Vice Chairman. Prior to being elected, he had served as Executive Director of the state committee.
Cam was a member of the Beckley Elks Lodge and had served on the Board of Trustees for many years as Chairman of the Board.
A lifelong member of Beckley Presbyterian Church, Cam was elected numerous times as an Elder, formerly was a Deacon and had served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was formerly Moderator of the Session Personnel Committee, and presently served as clerk of the Session.
Cam was married for 32 years to the late Susan Lazenby Lewis. He was the proud father of Charles Cameron Lewis III, of Killeen, Texas; and Rachael L. Gibson, and husband Josh Gibson, of Durham, N.C. He was the proud grandfather of Suzana Kate Gibson, Leo Cameron Gibson, and Nora Caroline Gibson, all of Durham. He is also survived by special cousins Nancy Kittle, of Huntersville, N.C., Hal Lynne Micali, of Los Altos, Calif., Joan Groves, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Jimmy Bartlett, of Wilmington, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, March 22, at Beckley Presbyterian Church, and from 10 a.m.-noon, the time of funeral service, Saturday, March 23, at the church.
