PAYNESVILLE —
Bessie Stewart Compton, 86 years of age, of Paynesville, W.Va., went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012 at her home following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Monroe and Louise Rife Stewart. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of the Bradshaw Church of God. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a wonderful homemaker. Bessie served as caretaker at the Boys Dormitory at Mountain Mission School and was a former cook at Buchanan General Hospital. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by her husband, Miles Compton; five sisters; Cora Kelly, Lucy Daniels, Lina Muncy, Ruby Davis and Virginia Fife; one brother, Firl Stewart; one daughter, Rhoda Louise Compton; and son-in-law, Tom Simons.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Simons of Richlands, Va., Brenda Goodman of Paynesville, W.Va., Alice and husband, Halsey Roberts, of Hamptonville, N.C.; one son, Robert and wife, Margaret Compton, of Jolo, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Scotty and wife, Crystal Hughes, of Raysal, W.Va., David and wife, Dara Hughes, of Gary, W.Va., Jesse and wife, April Roberts, of Statesville, N.C., Angie and husband, Jimmy Mattingly, of Troutman, N.C., Traci and husband, Daniel Blankenship, of Troutman, N.C. Also, survived by seven great-grandchildren, Brendan Blankenship, Robbie Hughes, Donavan Poore, Bo Mattingly, Halston Mattingly, Hannah Burke and Daniel Long; two special caregivers, her nieces, Helen Asbury and Pauline Christian; one adopted daughter, Phyllis Justus; and special lifetime friends, the Easterling Families.
Funeral Services for Bessie Stewart Compton will be conducted Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Family Worship Center, Jolo, W.Va., with the Revs. Bill Harman, Roger Payne and Charles Rose officiating with burial to follow in the Vance Cemetery, Paynesville, W.Va.
Friends may call at the Family Worship Center, Jolo, W.Va., Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. with services at 7:00 p.m.
Active Pallbearers will be Daniel Blankenship, Jimmy Mattingly, Scotty Hughes, David Hughes, Jesse Roberts, Donovan Poore, Daniel Long and Jeff Easterling.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Henry Kelly, Jimmy Kelly, Bobby Muncy, Johnny Muncy, Bobby Daniels, Walter Stewart, Eric Johnson, Ralph Fife and Bruce Fife.
