HUNTINGTON —
Bluefield senior wrestler Brandon Eldridge advanced to the Class A-AA state tournament finals during the semifinals on Friday at Big Sandy Superstore Arena:
Eldridge, wrestling in the 160-pound weight class, decisioned Jacob Mellott of Keyster 5-0, and will see a state title in the championship round today.
Fellow Bluefield senior Julius Thomas advanced to the semifinals with a 17-13 decision over Alec Moscufo of North Marion, but dropped a close 1-0 decision to Zane Weese from Herbert Hoover.
Eldridge, who placed fourth in the state tournament last season, advanced to the semifinal round with a 7-2 win over Wahama’s Kane Roush.
Shawn Pennington won three consolation round matches on Friday in the 195-pound class, defeating Kyle Frazier 4-2 in overtime, along with Dylon McBride of Independence (4-2) and Scott Gibson from Roane County (11-3).
Cody Gore split a pair of matches on Friday, defeating Brent Barber of Fairmont Senior (:35) and falling to Grafton’s Ryan Helmick (4:35).
Tyler Brooks of Bluefield was defeated in the first consolation round by Kyle Schlieper of Cameron 13-4 in a major decision.
Greenbrier West leads the team competition with 115.5 points, followed by Independence with 95.5. Bluefield is 19th with 35 points.
