PILGRIM'S KNOB, Va. —
When is a tournament not a tournament?
When one of the four teams scheduled to play is a no-show.
Rural Retreat forced Twin Valley to retreat from pre-game warm-ups when the Wythe County team failed to show for the second game on opening night of the Coalfield Clash Thursday night.
As it turned out Haysi and Richlands basically traveled to Twin Valley to play and the Tigers ran past the Blue Tornado, 62-33 in Thursday's one and only varsity contest.
Full-court zone pressure helped the Tigers lead from start to finish, in an 8-1 run to open the game and in an 11-0 run that staked Haysi (4-4) to a 38-17 lead near the end of the first half.
"We've been working on our press and we've just not played good defense this year," Haysi cioach David Robinette said. "We came out and tried to play some defense tonight and it got us easy baskets. And we executed well. We finished with 18 assists."
Six players had two or more assists for the Tigers, led by senior Peyton O'Quinn with five and freshman Hunter Sutherland with four.
Three Haysi starters scored in double figures led by Tyler Tipton with 17 points. Sutherland added 14 points and O'Quinn scored 11.
Ben Brown and Trent Davis each scored eight points for Richlands. Brown added nine rebounds and five steals for the Blues.
There were two junior varsity games. Richlands defeated Haysi and Twin Valley beat Virginia High.
Twin Valley is postponing tonight's regularly scheduled game with Northwood and will play Rural Retreat at 7:00 p.m. The tournament will resume on Saturday.
