BRISTOL, Va. —
Thursday’s nightcap of the Bordeline Classic quarterfinals matched up a perennial state power against a team hoping to become one.
Gate City and Grundy both struggled to make shots and sometimes get them, but the Blue Devils prevailed, 43-35, behind the second-half play of Jordan Gose, who scored nine of her 13 points and nine of her 10 rebounds after the intermission.
It wasn’t pretty.
Neither team made a significant run in the first half, but Grundy made just enough shots to build a modest 24-20 halftime lead behind Morgan Hall, who scored six points and grabbed half of her rebounds before the break.
Loni Webb scored 12 points for the Golden Wave, who took a 32-31 lead into the final period when Gate City held them without a field goal and just three points.
Despite a slew of turnovers itself the Blue Devils took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter on back-back buckets by Gose. Gate City ended the game on an 8-2 run.
Morgan Gose added 13 points for Gate City , which will face Unaka in tonight’s 8:30 p.m. semifinal nightcap.
