High school football playoffs begin this weekend in both Virginias. In the Old Dominion, Tazewell Bulldogs will play at Marion on Friday while the Richlands Blue Tornado gets a bye in Region IV. In Group A Division 2, Graham will host the new Union High at Mitchell Stadium on Saturday night, while Giles is at home with James River and Grundy goes to Fort Chiswell. In Division 1, Honaker hosts Patrick Henry on Saturday. Other games next weekend featuring area teams are Castlewood at Haysi and Hurley at Rural Retreat.
In West Virginia, the Bluefield Beavers are fifth in Class AA and will host Roane County on Friday night at Mitchell. Wyoming East will travel to Scott on Friday night and River View will play at Bridgeport at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
