PRINCETON —
Typically freshmen are not on varsity. Typically you do not expect them to score. Princeton’s Shayla Walls is not your typical freshman.
Walls scored four goals as Princeton defeated Riverside 8-0 on Thursday evening at Princeton Senior High School.
Princeton found the net early and often thanks to corner kicks. Victoria Billips and Walls found the back of the net in the first two minutes.
“It was great,” Princeton head coach Michelle Dye said. “We had several conversations with the girls to step up their play from the beginning. We were really impressed.”
Princeton (3-2) added two more goals in the first when Walls and Carly Powell scored midway through the opening 40 minutes.
Riverside head coach Lisa Black was impressed with Princeton, saying, “they have a really strong offense, especially (Shayla Walls).”
Walls strong play continued in the second as she found the net two more time to give her four on the night.
“She has really stepped it up,” Dye said of Walls. “She is definitely fulfilling her role.”
Walls was all smiles after the game saying, “its kind of exciting. I just try to do what I can.”
Walls is not the only freshman starting for Princeton. In fact, most of their starters are underclassmen.
“We have a young offense,” Dye said. “They’re all either sophomores or freshmen. We were real happy with the offense tonight.”
Megan Pettus and Whitney Hill rounded out the scoring for Princeton. Kayla Davis added two assists while Jessica Inman, Ashley Culicerto, Hannah Preservati, Kelsey Lane, Chelsea Walls and Victoria Billips all added an assist.
As for Riverside, they knew they were in for a touch match and were playing a few girls down. “We have quite a few injuries right now,” Riverside head coach Lisa Black said. “Plus we’ve had four really tough games this week and played a really good team tonight.”
Princeton travels to PikeView on Tuesday.
Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
