PRINCETON —
It was a rainy, chilly night at Hunnicutt Stadium in Princeton as the PikeView Panthers survived a grueling match-up with the River View Raiders Friday night 21-8.
Traditionally, the Panthers attack on the ground, but came out throwing against River View.
“We try to do what the defense gives us,” PikeView head coach Jeff Damewood said. “Early in the game they were really bringing the heat and we were having problems moving the ball on the ground. We were fortunate to connect on a couple big passes.”
PikeView went to the air for big plays with Ben Nester completing four throws for over 20 yards in the first half including a 66-yard bomb to Shaq Peavy late the second for a touchdown.
The Panthers opened up scoring late in the first quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by Jelani Burrell.
River View answered early in the second with a Trey Bailey 1-yard touchdown score after two failed quarterback sneaks at the goal line. The Raiders went for two, but came up empty.
PikeView wasted no time scoring on their very next series. Nester found wideout Tommy Symms on a well-placed throw for a 30-yard gain to set up a Tyler Farley 3-yard touchdown run.
The Panthers closed out the second half with Peavy’s touchdown.
“Its something you have to make a decision on,” River View head coach Mitch Estep said. “We thought if we could contain the running game, they had would have to be pretty good passing tonight to beat us. Tonight they answered the bell.”
PikeView answered with 118 yards passing on four completions by Nester, all in the first half.
The second half saw a scare for PikeView with star quarterback Nester going down with an injury. Coach Damewood was optimistic that the injury wouldn’t be very serious.
“I’m hoping it just some fluid in the knee,” Damewood said. “He was walking fine. I think he’ll be ready to go next Friday.”
Without Nester, PikeView’s offense slowed down just as River View’s began to find holes in the Panthers defense.
“I think we played out of position,” Damewood said. “They had a good gameplan. We had a hard time stopping the dive.”
“We thought we were a little more balanced,” Coach Estep said of his gameplan. “We’ve traditionally been a good running team so it didn’t surprise me. We had a little problem inside the red zone.”
Twice in the fourth quarter, River View was driving only to come up short.
On fourth and goal from the one, the Raiders tried a pitch out only to be stuffed at the goal. Estep said he would do the same again.
“I’ll never second guess what we do,” Estep said of the decision. “We’ll look at the film and find some plays that could help us in the red zone and get better.”
Cody Underwood finished with 155 yards passing and 27 yards rushing for the Raiders. As a team, River View had 163 yards on the ground.
“The kids played pretty good,” Estep said. “We played a Class AA playoff team tonight, but we’re never satisfied with a loss.”
PikeView, now 2-0, was led by Robbie Samosky’s 57 yards on nine carries. Symms finished with 62 yards on two receptions with Peavy leading the team receiving with 66 yards and a touchdown.
PikeView plays Liberty (Raleigh) next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The game is slated to be played at either PikeView High School or Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield.
River View (1-1) takes on Man on Sept. 17 for what is slated to be a home game, although the Raiders’ field might not be ready for use.
