ONA —
The PikeView girls cross country team and Panthers’ boys runner Jason Weitzel will compete today in the Class AA/A state meet at Cabell Midland High School.
PikeView had four girls place in the top nine at least week’s Region 3 meet at their home course in Gardner.
That allowed the Panthers to score 26 points, nine better than second place Richwood (35).
Katelyn Odle led PikeView, finishing third in 23:24, followed by Sophie Klein (4th, 23:44), Kaylin Kessenger (7th, 25:49) and Kayla Blake (9th, 27:07). Raelynn Smith (15th, 30:28) will also run for the Panthers.
Weitzel, whose brother, Jordan, was a standout basketball and cross country runner at PikeView, won the Region 3 boys meet last week in 17:32, nearly two minutes faster than Thomas Bowles of Sherman (19:14).
Weitzel, who is just a sophomore, finished 13th in state competition last year.
The race begins today at 10 a.m. i
