BASTIAN, Va. —
Fort Chiswell captured the Mountain Empire District title on Friday night as the Pioneers erupted for 35 first-quarter points and coasted past the winless Bland County Bears 49-7.
Fort Chiswell ran its record to 5-0 in the MED and 9-1 overall, securing the top seed in the Group A, Division 2 playoffs that begin next week. The Bears ended their season 0-5, 0-10, just the second time in team history that Bland County ended 0-10.
Daniel Hamm gained 159 yards rushing with three touchdowns on four carries, all in the opening period. Teammate Dallas Ward added 106 yards on the ground on six carries with two scores. The Pioneers outgained the Bears 366 to 122 in rushing yards.
For the Bears, Mason Christian accounted for the lone score on a late 10-yard touchdown run. He finished with 34 rushing yards on four carries and accounted for 96 all-purpose yards with four kickoff returns totaling 62 yards.
