Blue Jays blank Burlington, Rays shut out Greeneville

BLUEFIELD — Jeremy Gabryszwski pitched six scoreless innings and the Blue Jays’ bullpen allowed one Burlington hit over the last three innings, while Nico Taylor was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Bluefield Blue Jays to an 8-0 win over the Burlington Royals, Sunday evening at Bowen Field.

Bluefield’s runs came in pairs, in the  fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. In the fourth Anderson was hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles by Seth Connor and Christian Lopes loaded the bases. Santiago Nessy grounded into a double play, but Anderson scored and Conner went to third. Taylor then singled to bring home Conner and make it 2-0.

The Jays added another deuce in the sixth. Again it was Anderson who got it started with a singled to center. He was erased on Conner’s fielder’s choice. Conner raced home on Lopes’ double to left. Again enter Taylor with a single to right that scored Lopes to make it 4-0.

In the seventh D.J. Jones legged out an infield single to third, stole second, went to third on Jorge Vega-Rosada’s fly out to right. Anderson then slammed his third home run of the season to make it 6-0.

The Jays were not finished. Nessy homered to open the eighth. Taylor and Dickie Joe Thon both walked and a ground out sent Taylor to third. Vega-Rosada hit a fielder’s choice that scored Taylor with the game’s final run.

Gabryszwski got the win, while Les Williams, Colby Broussard and Wil Browning each worked a scoreless inning of relief for Bluefield.

Yender Carmano, Burlington’s starter, pitched seven innings and was tagged with the loss.

PRINCETON — It was a pitcher’s duel at Hunnicutt Stadium, Sunday afternoon and Brandon Suero and the Princeton Rays came out on top of the Greeneville Astros 1-0 at Hunnicutt Field. Suero pitched six innings of five-hit, shutout ball and then the bullpen took over and pitched no hit, scoreless ball for the remainder of the game.

Princeton’s lone run, enough for the victory, came in the fourth when Willie Argo was hit by a pitch. Argo then stole second and scored on Omar Narvaez’s single to left.

John Alexander had two hits for the Rays. Jonathan Weaver, Alex Keudell and Nick Sawyer each pitched an inning of no-hit relief and Sawyer earned the save, giving Suero the win.
