CHARLESTON — —
Jake Lilly showed a statewide audience on Saturday night what he can contribute to a football team.
The three-time all-state performer for the Bluefield Beavers scored the first and last touchdowns for the South, and was named its most valuable player, in a 21-6 win in the annual North-South All-Star Football Classic in front of 2,092 paid fans at Laidley Field in Charleston.
The South prevailed despite having three passes intercepted and losing both of its fumbles. The winners ran for 143 yards and passed for 152, while the North generated 188 total yards on offense and led in first downs, 16 to 12.
Lilly’s 4-yard run 4:45 before halftime, and a point-after kick by Adam Cook, produced the only points of the first half.
Early in the third quarter, Shaquille Williams ran an interception 100 yards to raise the South’s lead to 14-0, but the North countered with a drive that ended on a 4-yard scoring run by Hunter Ferguson. The point-after kick failed.
Less than a minute later on the game clock, Lilly took a fumble return 62 yards for the final touchdown.
Lilly had two carries for 7 yards in the game, and threw one incomplete pass.
Cody Parker of James Monroe had one of the South’s two quarterback sacks, accounting for a 7-yard loss. Linemen Colt Karnes of Princeton and John Gibson of Bluefield were also selected to play in the annual contest.
The North’s Cotey Wallace was the game’s leading ground-gainer, with 50 yards on 13 rushes. Teammate Ray Wisenburg had 69 receiving yards on six catches.
