BASKETBALL

PRINCETON — The annual Princeton Elks #1459 Hoop Shoot is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 10, at the Princeton Recreational Center. Signups start at 1:30 p.m. and the contest will start at 2. There are three age groups in both boys and girls — 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Age is determined by child’s age on April 1, 2010. There is no cost to compete, and trophies will be awarded to the top three in each age group. All winners are eligible to compete at Huntington on Jan. 16. BLUEFIELD — The annual Bluefield Elks #269 Hoop Shoot is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Greater Bluefield Community Center. Signups start at 9 a.m., with age groups including boys and girls, ages 8-13. There is no cost to compete, and all winners are eligible to participate at Huntington on Jan. 16. CASTLEWOOD, Va. — The 8th Annual Bring the Rain Classic will be held on Jan. 7-10 at Castlewood and St. Paul high schools. Divisions include girls 9U-13U and boys 10U-14U. HONAKER, Va. — The Fourth Annual Clinch Mountain Classic will be held from Jan. 28-31 at Honaker High and Elementary Schools. Age groups range from second-third grade boys and girls to eighth-ninth grade boys and girls. CASTLEWOOD, Va. — The 8th Annual Lady Devils Classic will be held February 4-7 at Castlewood High School. This is the elite girl's basketball tournament in Southwest Virginia. Only 40 teams will be accepted. There will be a 3 game gurantee and there is only a $100 entry fee. Divisions will include Girls 9U-13U. BLUEFIELD — Fishing guide and outdoor writer Dr. Michael Smith will offer a one-day “Fly-Fishing 101” course on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at the Mountain View Student Residence Center. The course, which will begin at 9 a.m., introduces students to fly-fishing basics, including: knots, equipment, fly selection, casting, and presentation. Dr. Smith, professor of English and Associate Dean of Humanities at BSC, has written five books about fishing in regional lakes and streams. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Weekly badges to attend The Greenbrier Classic, a PGA golf tournament on July 26-Aug. 1 at The Greenbrier Resort, are being sold until Feb. 26 or while supplies last, through partnerships with several organizations including the Chuck Mathena Center, Catholic Charities West Virginia, The First Tee of West Virginia and Big Creek People in Action. BRUSH FORK — The 15th annual Two Virginias’ area Rough N’ Rowdy Brawl boxing contest will be held at the Brushfork Armory on Jan. 22-23. The two-day single elimination boxing contest features local men and women with limited or no ring experience. Up to 7,500 in cash plus title jackets and trophies will be awarded.
