Fiery Brew
Brewster on target for G-Men
PRINCETON — Fans leaving the Princeton Senior High School gym on Tuesday night may very well have been saying, "Great Scott!"
Scott Brewster of the Graham G-Men turned its game with Princeton upside down, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter and leading the G-Men to a 67-57 win over the host team in the second game of the First Community Bank Holiday Classic tournament on the Ralph Ball Court.
The roller-coaster game turned in Graham's favor early, as the G-Men (2-1) took a 14-6 lead after one period. Princeton chipped away, holding their guests to three field goals and three successful foul shots in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Sean Williams and O.B. Pannell hit from the floor, and in the final 40 seconds of the half Robert Redd made his only two buckets of the game as Princeton (0-1) squeaked ahead 24-23 at intermission.
"We needed to cut down on turnovers," Brewster said, "and we weren't aggressive enough."
The homestanding Tigers started driving the lane in the third quarter and opened up an 11-point lead, 42-31, with 2:55 left in that period.
Things were just getting started.
Graham got a couple of transition baskets and a pair of foul shots to trim the Princeton lead to 43-37 going into the final period. Brewster began his surge with rebounds, foul shots and layups, while Princeton committed costly turnovers and could not get the rock to fall through the hoop.
The score was tied at 48-48 when David Marrs dished the ball to Brewster in the paint to put Graham ahead for good. In the final 2:14 of action, Graham got other scorers into the act and went 9-for-14 at the foul line to hold off any attempt at a comeback by Princeton.
Grahamn coach Glynn Carlock Jr. said, "In the first half, we weren't able to press defensively as much as we wanted. (In the second half), we felt like that disrupted them quite a bit."
Brewster said, "We got into our press. We like to turn up the tempo. We started running the floor, we got easy baskets."
It was the first game of the season for the Tigers, who had a couple of opportunities postponed by the weather.
Graham will play Bluefield at 7:30 tonight in the tournament championship. Princeton and PikeView will take the court at 5:30 to start the evening with the consolation game.
Carlock said, "We get to be in the showcase game, against a team (Bluefield) that we'll see twice. We expect a packed house."
O.B. Pannell led the Tigers with 11 points, while Sean Williams chipped in 10.
Jordan Bryan added 21 points for Graham.
