BASEBALL

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Bluefield College will host its Second Annual Tierney Scholarship Awareness Dinner, featuring Tazewell native and Major League Baseball pitcher Billy Wagner on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Bluefield (W.Va.) Elks Club. The dinner brings prominent speakers to the community each year with the hope that local residents will pay premium prices to hear the notable speakers and ultimately support the BC Fund for Scholarships. The program will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7, and a sports auction during dinner to support the cause. Individual tickets for dinner and to hear Wagner speak are $100, or $125 to also participate in the meet-and-greet session prior to dinner. A table of eight is $1,200 and includes dinner, the program, the meet-and-greet, and a baseball autographed by Wagner for all eight guests. For reservations, call (276) 326-4458.

BASKETBALL

BLUEFIELD — The West Virginia Blazers will open its 2009-2010 season with an exhibition contest on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Bluefield State College’s Ned Shott Gymnasium. The Blazers will play the Salem Mustangs at noon. Admission is $2, with children under 8 admitted free.

UPLAND — A one-day “Winning Souls by Scoring Goals” basketball tournament will take place on Saturday, Nov. 28, starting at 9 a.m. at The Lord’s Family Worship & Recreation Center in Upland, McDowell County (the former Elkhorn High School gym). This event is open to both male and females. The age groups will be 8-12, 13-15, 16-18 and 19-and-over. Teams will consist of seven members. Admission will be $5 for participants 12 and under, and $10 for all over the age of 12. The public will be admitted free. BLUEFIELD — Fishing guide and outdoor writer Dr. Michael Smith will offer a one-day “Fly-Fishing 101” course on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at the Mountain View Student Residence Center. The course, which will begin at 9 a.m., introduces students to fly-fishing basics, including: knots, equipment, fly selection, casting, and presentation. Dr. Smith, professor of English and Associate Dean of Humanities at BSC, has written five books about fishing in regional lakes and streams. RICHLANDS, Va. — The second annual Tornado Bowl flag football tournament will be held at Richlands High School on Dec. 19.
