IAEGER —The Iaeger Cubs closed out their last regular season with fireworks last night by scoring 28 first quarter points in route to a 44-22 win over Trinity Christian at Fanning Field.
The Cubs will wait until Sunday to see who they will face in the opening round of the state playoffs that will begin next Friday.
Senior Bradley Kelly scored three times on runs of 52, 25, and 9 yards to lead Iaeger to the win and cap an 8-2 regular season.
Remarked 30th year Iaeger head coach Mitch Estep, “Our game plan was to get started quick. After that buzz saw last week (against Westside), we wanted to come out quick.”
Junior Trey Bailey vaulted Iaeger on top with a 25 yard burst up the middle on only the fourth play of the contest, after a shanked opening kickoff by the Cubs was recovered at the Warrior 40.
Kelly raced 52 yards at the 7:22 mark to up the count to 12-0.
Junior quarterback Cody “Action” Jackson scored on a 40 yard keeper around left end with 4:41 remaining in the opening frame, and following Trey Lockhart’s conversion pass to Landon Hurley the advantage increased to 20-0.
A John Blankenship fumble recovery set the stage for a Hurley’s three yard touchdown with 3:28 showing.
Jeremy Marushia tacked on the extra points on a pass from Jackson.
After the 28-0 first chapter, the Cubs scored on their fifth consecutive possession when Kelley ran 25 yards for the TD with 9:30 remaining in the initial half. Bailey’s PAT carry extended the lead to 36-0.
Brad McLaughlin scored the first of his three TD’s with 8:54 remaining on a seven yard dash. He then ran the extra points for a 36-8 score.
McLaughlin added a second bell ringer, also from 7 yards out, at the 5:24 mark to bring the score to 36-14 at intermission.
Kelly’s 9 yard burst 1:53 into the third quarter ended the Iaeger scoring and marked his exit, along with the other Iaeger starters, from the lineup.
Bailey again added the extra points on a run.
McLaughlin 9 yard jaunt with 23.9 seconds remaining in the contest, followed by his PAT run, closed out highschool play at Fanning Field.
Kelly had 10 carries for 156 yards for the Cubs, while Bailey added 55 yards on only two attempts.
Justin Rosier totalled 49 yards on 12 attempts for Trinity, which finishes 2-8 in its initial season on the gridiron.
