MONTCALM — The Iaeger Cubs were ready for some football.
Cody Jackson threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, as the Class A eighth-ranked Cubs won their sixth straight game with a 58-31 victory over Montcalm during a rare Monday night game at Prudich Field.
The contest was slated to be played last Friday, but a plethora of injuries and students with flu-like symptoms at Montcalm forced the game to be pushed by a couple of days. Montcalm still had just 12 players dressed for this game, but fought hard throughout.
Friday or Monday, it didn’t matter to the Cubs.
Iaeger (7-1) — playing its 91st and final season as a school — and 84th with a football team — before consolidating next fall with Big Creek at River View High School in Bradshaw — continues its march to the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
The Cubs have been known to pass about as often as they play on Monday night. Yet, Iaeger came out throwing the ball, with Jackson competing touchown passes of 39 (Trey Bailey), 47 (Bradley Kelly) and 18 yards (Lawrence Morgan).
Iaeger finished with 532 total yards on offense, including 322 on the ground, with all but 84 coming in the second half. Eight different Cubs scored touchdowns, including five rushing scores from Jackson (9 yards), David Blankenship (20), Brandon Church (75), Bryan Church (4) and Austin Walker (30), who played the entire second half at quarterback for the Cubs.
Montcalm (1-7), which was led by Jacob Shrewsbury's 98 yards and 57 from Jabe Meadows, trailed 34-7 at the break, with the Generals' lone score coming on a Shrewsbury 1-yard run.
The Generals trailed 42-7 after Iaeger’s initial points of the third quarter, but scored 24 second half points. Meadows ran for a touchdown of 6 yards, and also connected with Naythan Mooney for a 5-yard scoring pass.
Other Montcalm scores came on a 16-yard run by Brad Wiley and a 65-yard kick return from Aaron Presley.
Iaeger turned Montcalm over twice, on a fumble recovery by Jordan Dotson and an interception from Walker. Presley had a fumble recovery for the Generals.
Iaeger will conclude its nine-game regular season on Friday by traveling to play Westside, which went into last week’s win over Summers County as the sixth-ranked team in Class AA.
Montcalm, which won its opener against winless Twin Valley, lost its seventh straight game.
The Generals will travel next Friday to Hannan (0-8), which has lost eight games by a combined 33.4 points per contest.
