Tigers out-volley Tigers, prep volleyball roundup

HONAKER, Va. — The Lady Tigers of Honaker ended a three-game losing skid with a Black Diamond District win over Haysi at Honaker Elementary School.

Honaker swept Haysi 3-0 25-23, 27-25, 28-26, although it was a very close match.

“This one was a little too interesting,” Honaker coach Greg Mullins said. “We had some key hits when we needed them and our serves was the big thing tonight. We only had 10 service errors and that’s very low for us.”

Rachel Artrip was the only player with double digit kills, leading Honaker by posting 11 kills. Emily Musick (9 kills) and Leanna Meade (7 kills) also had a big night at the net. Nicole Roman distributed 18 assists. Samantha Taylor and Lindsay Dye led Honaker at the service line with nine points each.

“Samantha and Lindsay are consistent about getting the ball in,” said Mullins. “They don’t get a lot of aces but they get the ball in. Tonight we were able to win their serves and that was the big thing. We played like we wanted it tonight.”

Senior Kristen Kiser led Haysi with 11 service points, including six aces. She also tallied six kills. Holly Bowman and Stephanie Lapp had five kills each for Haysi.

Honaker (6-13, 5-3) will conclude their regular season when they play at Powell Valley on Thursday. Haysi (5-11, 2-4) will host Hurley on Thursday and they face Twin Valley the following week.
