Mustard cans seven 3s to lead Bland County past the Bulldogs

TAZEWELL, Va. — Kirby Mustard was 7-for-7 from 3-point range and finished with 25 points, leading the Bears to a 71-47 win over Tazewell on Tuesday night.

Laurel Hankins added 19 points for Bland County, which travels to Northwood on Tuesday. Hankins and Kristin Dunn each had five rebounds.

Katelyn Mitchell led Tazewell with 11 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Brittney Muncy added nine points, seven boards and two blocked shots, while Cara Cecil pulled down six rebounds.

Tazewell (2-5) travels Friday to Richlands.

HINTON — Lauren Estes and Candace Brown scored 16 points apiece, as No. 1 Summers County rolled to a win over the Patriots.

Summers County, which also received 12 points and six assists from Hallie Gunnoe and 10 rebounds from Brown, led 33-0 after the first quarter and 52-0 at halftime.

Allissa Ward led Independence with 11 points.

Hannah Gunnoe tossed in 10 points for the Bobcats (7-0), while Emily Blevins added nine.

IAEGER — Donald White hit four 3s and finished with 17 points, leading Montcalm to the John Sparks Tournament championship over the Cubs.

David Kolb added 13 points and five rebounds for Montcalm, while Steven McClanahan had eight points, six boards and four assists.

Jabe Meadows added five boards for the Generals (3-4), which travel next Tuesday to Mount Hope for a 5:30 game.

Iaeger (2-3) was led by J.L. Reed with 13 points, seven boards, three assists and two steals. Jared Roberts scored 11 points and added six boards, while Cody Jackson had six points and and seven rebounds. Landon Hurley also had three assists.

Despite the loss, Iaeger head coach Don Smith was pleased with the four teams that participated in the tournament.

“The tournament was well-attended and I want to think everybody that participated and everybody that was here,” said Smith, whose Cubs struggled shooting, hitting just 18-54 from the field and 7-17 from the free throw line.

Iaeger will host Man on Friday.

IAEGER — Phillip Hopkins’ foul shots broke a 44-44 tie with 12 seconds left on Monday, and J.L. Reed stole Big Creek’s in-bounds pass and scored the final layup as the Iaeger Cubs beat the Owls in the first round of the John Sparks Memorial Tournament.

Reed had 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals for Iaeger. Cody Jackson cleared 11 rebounds. Lawrence Morgan had nine rebounds and two assists. Jared Roberts and Landon Hurley each had two steals, and Hopkins provided two assists.

Big Creek shot 16-for-47 from the floor and 6-for-20 at the foul line, with 15 turnovers.

A portion of the funds from the tournament go to the John Sparks Memorial Grant to a Iaeger graduating senior.

Big Creek plays at Hurley on Friday.

NEW RICHMOND — The Warriors raised their record to 4-0 Monday in the first round of their Family Healthcare Classic in Wyoming County. Gentry Shrewsbury paced all scorers with 25 points; Evan Muscari hit three treys and scored 15 points. Brett Ervin had 20 for Robert C. Byrd.

Westside beat Bridgeport 54-50 in Monday’s other game. Eric Bailey led the Renegades (3-1) with 14 points, while Jerome Axto tossed in 26 for Bridgeport (1-4).

Wyoming East plays Friday at Independence.
